I Love a Thrifty Find!

I spent a fun morning yesterday with my friend Mary, hi Mar! We hit four maybe five thrift shops and had a blast. She took me all around (I had no idea where I was). It was a little adventure and I found some great pieces.

Lost of Ironstone, mostly Buffalo China, sweet little glasses, a big box of old Ball & Atlas jars that we split, a vintage bowl, mugs, platters, Meakin tea cup saucers, they are adorable! Some things will be going in my shop and some added to my collection.

Here's a peek. I was going to style everything pretty but it's gorgeous out today and I've been busy setting up our porches! So much to do!

The Week's Finds.

I've been really good, staying away from the estate sales but this week I was pretty caught up at home and in need of some time out of the house. 

I got a small pitcher the first day (not pictured). It was pretty, not like any other I have & reasonable so I snagged it. But there were LOTS of other pieces. I went back this morning and the ironstone was half off. I scored all three of these gorgeous pieces for under $40!

 

 

The soup turene actually came with an ironstone ladle (not pictured). I got the footed pedestal. I knew that would be great for display and the short pot. Do you know what these were used for? I do, just recently found out. I loved the detail on it, gave it a good washing and no food will be served in it! I just couldn't resist.

Remember when I said I had a light bulb moment about the dining room?

Well, as I've mentioned I'd like to replace the dining room set but since I haven't had any luck selling it. I thought I'd remove the door of the china cabinet, take out the glass shelves, have wood ones made and paint the cabinet in a light color with chalk paint.

 

The set is just too matchy matchy for my taste now and way TOO much wood!  I may paint the mirror (you can see it behind the pieces above. Who knows maybe even the chairs will see some paint too!

Friday's Finds.

I got out to one sale and found a few lovely items.

 

There was a ton of ironstone. This pitcher was so reasonable and it's a size and shape I don't have!

 

I love this little mirror, it was covered in dirt in the garage. I put it behind my camera collection for now.

 

I loved the shape and size of this aluminum tray. I thought it would be sweet on the ottoman in the family room.

Weekend Finds.

It was one of the first things I spotted at the Antique Market on Sunday. It was marked $12. I asked the lady if the price included the bottles, she said yes and for you it's $10. I was thrilled, it just made me smile. All 20 bottles are there and in nearly perfect shape no chips or cracks. I think it'll be great for flowers or even neat for drinks at a party. 

 

 

I also bought a white ironstone sugar bowl for $4. The lid was missing but it'll be great for flowers too!

Friday's Finds. Ironstone.

I went to three sales yesterday and found a few goodies. One sale had a table full of ironstone but it was over priced. The pitcher was the most reasonable thing it was less than $10. I found the little white dish (.50) and the four bowls at the other sales. The bowls were only $3/each. I thought they'd make a nice addition to my growing collection.

Six Finds & Stairs.

I was out running errands today and came across an estate sale sign. I had a few minutes so I thought I'd check it out. Upon entering the house it was quite ornate. I wasn't real hopeful about finding anything. That was until I stepped into the garage, I came across four wood folding chairs. I've been looking for some ever since I did the wedding table for the TV segment (those I borrowed). They will be perfect for my outdoor tables, parties and holidays. The little man and I wandered down to the basement where we came upon two more. Happy dance. I paid $12 for the six chairs.

 

 

In other news, I've begun removing the carpet runners my Dad put on the stairs. They got slippery when it rained so that was our solution.

Awhile ago I had heard you can put sand in the paint and it acts as a grip. I still have one more to go and some sanding to do before I get to the solid stain I purchased. It's a gray but a shade darker.

Thank you for all your sweet comments about yesterday's post. It was bittersweet, he did a really great job. I was so proud. I cried and smiled. It was precious.

Weekend Finds. Desk Love.

I went to a few sales on Friday and there was one piece I couldn't forget about, a desk.  It was marked $125 and while I loved it I was not about to pay full price for it. So early this morning the boys and I took a ride knowing today it would be half off. I thought if it's meant to be it will be there waiting for me. When I turned the corner and saw it I was cautiously optimistic since I knew there could be a sold tag on it.  I think I may have squealed when I realized it was not sold! The boys guarded it for me while I flagged someone down to stake my claim to it. 

 

 

 

I love the vertical detail and the horizontal rope detail. It's feminine in a way and a bit formal. I'm still not sure whether or not I'll paint this. I was thinking I might leave the top stained and paint the rest with my favorite chalk paint.

 

 

We have a decent size landing at the top of the staircase which currently serves as the home office. The desk that's there is nothing special so my plan is to sell it at our yard sale. I'll share my plans for the space with you soon.  I'm thinking a parsons chair with a pleated slipcover would be perfect with the desk.

Friday's Finds.

As luck would have it I found another bench and for a bargain too! It's pretty dusty & dirty but nothing that some sanding and a fresh coat of paint can't fix! Since this is  more rustic I think this will end up on the side porch and the nicer black bench will remain on the back porch (you can see last post). It'll be protected from the elements better in the back. The long box is sturdy and has a cute upholstery handle. I can see it lined with pots. I paid $1 for it, I'm certain the wood to build this would be at least $10.

 

I was thrilled to find the ironstone piece. I'm not sure exactly what you'd call it but I love it! I think some fresh lemons, apples or mounded with strawberries would be beautiful!

 

I also found some Buffalo China which I can't pass on. The four little side dishes and the creamer was $5 for all.

 

At another sale I found the wood head form. It was marked .50 and of course I knew I had to have it! I've been looking for one to photograph the hats and fascinators for my Etsy shop.

The buttons and the tiny stool/bench were an additional $5. There are some gorgeous glass, rhinestone &  mother of pearl in the tins.

I'm certain the little stool will get a coat of paint too. I thought it would be cute for magazines or to put your feet up on.

Well I hope the sun shines wherever you are. It's still raining like crazy here.

My Little Lamp. Milkglass & Burlap.

Remember the pair of milk glass lamps I found awhile back? Well I finally got around to getting shades for them at Target.  

I keep moving things around and the piece next to the stairs has been empty since I moved the red lamp to my entry table. I used a couple of books under the lamp to add some much needed height. I'm pretty sure these are meant to be bedside lamps but for now it's found a home.

The burlap really ties all the lighting together.

 

Can you tell I'm ready for the sun to shine! I've even broke out the shells and starfish!

In other odds & ends. My chalk paint arrived yesterday and I can't wait to get painting. It looks like baseball is going to have to wait another week or so. I'm hoping Sunday I'll get some time to head to the first outdoor sale of the season.

Mirror, Mirror.

I've been looking for months for a mirror for the living room. Seems everything I love has been at least $400 and I wasn't looking to spend quite that much. Lately, I've been looking on Craig's List and came across an old mirror. It's smaller than I wanted but at $25 I thought it could work until I come across something bigger. The curved top was pretty and the dark wood works well with some of the other pieces in the room.

 

I still need something for the wall behind the couch. I had my lighted star there for the Holidays but I've taken it down and am ready to find something more permanent for the spot.
